Curious about the term "in your face" shoegaze? Or what would happen if emo indie and high-octane punk rock had a musical love affair in a techno club?
Welcome to TAPE TRASH's debut album, "TAPE TRASH 4-EVER." An album that exudes creative abundance and an unbridled joy of expression. Over the course of a year, the band has, in a rather unconventional way, released tracks in a steady pace as they were recorded. Eventually, the tracks each got a home in two respective EPs. Based on these two EPs plus a couple of new tracks, we’re left with the debut album "TAPE TRASH 4-EVER," which is out on September 29th. This collection features 11 songs of catchy indie rock songs bathed in beautiful blissful harmonies and raw energy.
The Birth of TAPE TRASH
Last year, frontman Anders Magnor Killerud found himself uncertain about pursuing music. The memory of being young and venturing into the city to listen to legendary indie records by Bloc Party, Broken Social Scene, and Broder Daniel in one of the capital's record stores ignites a spark to go back to his musical roots and explore the enchanting era full of dreams and new discoveries. In the rehearsal room with bandmate and multi-instrumentalist Kristofer Staxrud, he finds the missing piece - the rawness and immediacy in the songwriting that had been lost in the long and drawn-out processes. TAPE TRASH was born.
Drawing from distinguished projects like Team Me, Spielbergs, Ludvig Moon, and Hilma Nikolaisen, TAPE TRASH quickly became a sanctuary where the duo could break free from perfectionism and challenge their own conventions. The writing process moved faster than either of them was accustomed to, and the focus shifted from how the track sounded to how the track felt. With each song, the boundaries were pushed further in the pursuit of a kind of musical ecstasy. Anders explains, “Even though the music is full of layers and more-is-more-mentality, the core of each song has been made in an instant”.
Enter the birth of a modern rock duo, where songs are layered with walls of sound shoegaze guitars, lush vocal tracks, and even synths reminiscent of techno and modern pop music, all held together by Staxrud’s pounding tight drums.
As time went on, the TAPE TRASH universe expanded with the addition of bassist and vocalist Hallvard Bonden, vocalist Kristian Grostad, and guitarist Andreas Engeseth, who, along with Staxrud and Killerud, comprise the live lineup of TAPE TRASH. Producer Øyvind Røsrud Gundersen also played a pivotal role in shaping the final product.
Delving deeper into the album, you'll discover a band drawing inspiration from a broad spectrum of periods and genres. The audacious bass-driven "CLAY" playfully nods to 80s post-punk, with its haunting vocals and panting drum groove. "NOT GOING HOME" takes us into the melancholic alternative rock landscape that dominated Scandinavia around the turn of the millennium, giving us albums like Mew's "Frengers" and Kent's "Hagnesta Hill." The beautiful and resonant indie-pop track "JUSTINE" pays homage to the influential band Broken Social Scene. TAPE TRASH's love for explosive emo-punk also shines through in tracks like "FEVER & ALCO" and the as-yet-unreleased "POPHAZE," where frantic and chaotic riffs marry melodic euphoria.
Lyrically, "TAPE TRASH 4-EVER" is, in many ways, a tribute to the essence of youth and the passion for music. "OLD HIGHS" tells the tale of a character clinging to fading youth, teetering on the edge between ecstasy and panic. The aforementioned "NOT GOING HOME" explores doubt, guilt, and fear that can haunt those who leave behind a strict religious faith, while also expressing a yearning for spiritual wholeness and meaning. Other lyrics attempt to dive into the character of one's 14-year-old self. Anders explains, "It's a stream of consciousness, sung in the moment. It's more about capturing a feeling and a mood than telling a coherent story."
"TAPE TRASH 4-EVER" is an album that overflows with immense passion and joy for music. It’s a celebration of finding oneself both musically and on a deep personal level, and rediscovering the joy of creating. It truly feels like this is just the beginning and a project that could take unforeseen directions. One thing is certain: TAPE TRASH is one of the post-genre bands that will shape the future of guitar music.
